How to talk about climate change without losing people
While thereβs scientific consensus and proof in the increased frequency of natural disasters, climate change can still be a taboo topic among regional Australia.
Since global warming started to become a mainstream topic of discussion it has been debated, contested and politicised - resulting in communities being divided and others - struggling to cope with ecoanxiety - ignoring it entirely.
Despite farmers being on the frontline of climate change, it is still considered by some a leftie inner city issue.
Social researcher Dr Rebecca Huntley and Emeritus Professor of Biology Lesley Hughes have dedicated themselves to raising awareness about the impacts of climate change, including supporting regional communities.
Even though climate change affects everything from our insurance, the food we can buy and even sometimes where we can live - only 30% of people understand how it impacts our daily lives.
Lesley and Rebecca share how the scientific side and social side of the issue are intertwined and the tough balance of motivating people to act on climate change without losing hope that the situation is impossible.
